Welcome to Island Hopping in the Andaman Sea of Thailand
Koh Lipe Island, Koh Lee Pae Island
Koh Lipe Island is the most important island in the Koh Rawi Island-Koh Adang Island archipelago. It is flat and dominated by lowlands in the middle portion and measures only 4 square kilometres. Due to the fact that water is available all year round, Koh Lee-peh Island is home to the largest human settlement of the region. The 800 native inhabitants are sea gypsies (Chao Lay), who settled on Koh Adang Island and Koh Rawi Island before the establishment of Koh Tarutao National Park and have their own language, tradition, religion, culture and dances, that separates them clearly from the Thai people. The village has a community school, a clinic and some basic shops.
Koh Lee Pae Island is the only place in Koh Tarutao National Park that offers accommodation besides the national park accomodation. There are no paved roads on the Koh Lipe Island and the few locals that own a motorbike drive along the sandy paths of the island. However, the 4 main beaches of Koh Lee-Pae Island are close to each other and it is possible to walk from one beach to the next in about 15-20 minutes. The beach on the eastern side of Koh Lee-pae Island and in front of the village is called Sunlight Beach. There are some bungalow operations within the Chao Lay village and south of it.
Pattaya Beach is the main beach and extends to the south of Koh Li-pe Island. Pataya Beach is bay-shaped and flanked by green verdant hills to both sides making it the most picturesque beach of Koh Lipe Thailand. Like some other beaches in the Andaman Sea of Thailand that are located far away from the mainland, Pattaya Beach has very soft and powdery white sand. It is perfect for swimming and snorkelling and here, most of the koh lipe accommodation bungalows and restaurants are located. Karma Beach is the most northern part of Sunlight Beach and faces Koh Adang Island. There is a secluded peninsula of white sand jutting out into the crystal clear blue Andaman Sea. Longtail boats for trips to neighbouring islands like Koh Adang Islands, Koh Rawi Islands, Koh Lipe Islands, Koh Klang Islands, Koh Dong Islands and Koh Lek Islands can be rented here.
Koh Leepae's Sunset Beach is the most secluded one on Koh Lipe Island and great for swimming and snorkelling from the beach. You can see the sun set between the other islands of the Koh Tarutao Marine National Park. Another place to enjoy snorkelling is around the 2 tiny islands just off Sunlight Beach, where you will need a longtail boat to go out there. Ko Lee Pae Island has no bank, please bring enough cash for your stay. Some resorts will change your foreign currency, but the exchange rate on Koh Lipe Island is not advantageous. Internet goes through a satellite connection and is therefore more expensive than on the mainland. Mobile phones can be used on Koh Lipe Island for customers of DTAC and AIS.
