Welcome to Island Hopping in the Andaman Sea of Thailand
Koh Phi Phi Don Islands
Koh Phi Phi Islands, once considered one of the most beautiful island groups in the world, is located half-way between Koh Phuket Island and Krabi in the Andaman Sea of Thailand and is part of the Koh Phi Phi - Had Nopparat National Park, that covers 390 square kilometres in Krabi Province. In former times the local people called Kho Pee Pee Island "Pulau Piapi". This derives from the language of the Andaman Sea gypsies, with the first word meaning an island and "Piapi" being the name of a plant growing in the mangrove forests. During the centuries the name changed to Koh Phi Phi Islands.
Koh Pee Pee Don Island in Thailand covers 28 square kilometres and consists of two parallel running wooded hills, that are connected by a narrow sandy isthmus covered by coconut groves, several hotel buildings and rimmed with beaches on either side. The southern beach of Koh P.P. Island, Tonsai Beach lies deep in a bay with limestone cliffs on one side and wooded hills on the other side, while Kho Phi Phi Islands northern Lohdalum Bay has shallow water that makes swimming possible only during high tide. On arrival to the main boat pier of Phi Phi Island a fee of 20 Baht is collected from every passenger for "The Parking Clean on Phi Phi Island" as stated on the ticket, whatever the meaning of this is.
Kho Phi Phi Don Island's centre is the long existing Muslim and Seagypsy village, Tonsai Village, that by today has changed to Koh PP Island town, consisting mostly of restaurants, dive shops and tour offices. About half an hour uphill is a viewpoint offering beautiful sights of the 2 Kho P. P. Islands and therefore worth a visit. The trail up hill starts either from Phi Phi Viewpoint Restaurant on the east side of Koh Phi Phi Don's Lohdalum Bay or with a staircase at the foot of the mountain behind the centre of Koh Pee Pee Town close to the water reservoir.
Koh PP Leh Island, with only 7 square kilometres the smaller one is more spectacular with their cliffs plunging hundred of metres into the sea. The concessions for harvesting the bird's nests in Kho Pee Pee Lae Island's caves, have so far excluded any habitation. Main attraction for visitors to Kho Phi Phi Leh Island is the popular Viking Cave with its ancient rock paintings of boats found inside, some of which vaguely resemble Viking longboats. Koh P.P. Leh Island's Maya Bay is recommended for snorkellers with colourful fish used to be fed by hand. The Maya Bay of Koh Phi Phi Lee Island was the location for the shooting of the film "The Beach" with Leonardo di Caprio and is now visited more than ever. Koh Phi Phi Leh Islands and the southern part of Koh Phi Phi Don Island attracts divers by its vertical walls which drop 20 to 30 metres below the surface.
